このウェブサイトで閲覧できるコレクションは、主に、G・E・クリスターソン氏が31年の沖縄滞在期間中に撮影した写真で構成されています。それらの写真はすべて1940年代から1970年代の珍しいものばかりです。
写真の中には、南城市域に関係のあるものがあります。G・E・クリスターソン氏は、那覇港の船舶修理工場（在琉米陸軍輸送部隊の課）で、船大工の作業長として勤務していましたが、彼の要請により、南城市域出身者が何人か、その職場で採用されることになりました。なお、南城市域は彼の妻の出身地でもあります。

2024年４月、G・E・クリスターソン氏の娘の1人、キャロル・クリスターソンさんは、米国から南城市役所にこれらの写真を送って下さりました。外国から寄贈された写真を公開することは、なんじょうデジタルアーカイブでは今回が初めてとなります。また、日英両言語で写真にキャプションをつけたのも、今回が初めてとなります。この点において、ギルバート・E・クリスターソンコレクションは、同アーカイブの全コレクションの中でユニークなものとなっています。

このプロジェクトは、キャロル・クリスターソンさんの献身的な貢献のおかげで完成させることができました。彼女は写真を寄贈して下さっただけでなく、彼女の父（G・E・クリスターソン氏）に関するエッセイの執筆もして下さりました。また、彼女は、なんじょうデジタルアーカイブ担当職員が作成した英文解説の校正のために適切な提案をして下さいました。キャロルさんのご協力に対し、心から感謝申し上げます。

本コレクションについて

ギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏について

ギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏は、1928年に米国で生まれました。1948年2月、彼は来沖し、米陸軍で船大工として働き始めました。1950年6月、彼の3年間の任務は終了しました。その後、彼は軍属として、それまでと同じ仕事を続けました。1979年2月、彼は妻および5人の娘とともに沖縄を去りました。
ギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏は、沖縄の人々に親切でした。たとえば、彼は、フリーメイソンのコーラル・ロッジ142のメンバーとして、米琉フレンドシップ・プログラムに参加し、沖縄の子供たちが需要の高い職業訓練を受けられるように、かれらを援助しました。その他、次のような出来事が注目に値します。彼は、廃棄された井戸に落ちた子供を救出しました。また、1964年開催の東京パラリンピックに出場する選手のために、50対の松葉づえを作って、かれらに贈呈しました。そして、ボートを救出したことでその勇気と献身が称えられ、褒美が与えられました。

本プロジェクトのはじまり

ギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏の娘、キャロル・クリスターソンさんは、米国からなんじょうデジタルアーカイブ担当者に電子メールを送り、彼女の父が所有していた「戦後沖縄の古写真コレクション」があることを伝えてくれました。また、コレクションをすべての人が楽しむことができるようにと、それらの写真をなんじょうデジタルアーカイブで保管することを提案して下さりました。われわれはその提案を喜んで受け入れ、彼女にできるだけ多くの写真の提供をお願いしました。キャロルさんはその後、（写真のデジタルデータを送信するという方法で）寄贈するために、プリント写真およびネガフィルムのデジタル化を開始しました。

本コレクションの見どころ

仕事
ギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏は沖縄での31年間、ほぼ那覇港で、米陸軍の仕事を行いました。本コレクションには、那覇港の仕事現場で働く労働者や熟練船大工たちの写真が多く含まれています。これらの写真には希少価値があります。なぜなら、本土復帰までは（軍港である）那覇港に立ち入ることは厳しく制限されていたからです。
ギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏は２つの目覚ましい成果をあげました。１つは、沖縄人従業員の職場の安全性を高めるための提案が、陸軍の褒賞委員会で採用されたことです。もう１つは、荒廃地の一部を垣花小中学校の遊び場と競技場に変える事業に従事し、感謝状を賜ったことです。

趣味
ギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏は次のような様々な趣味を持っていました。シュノーケリング、ダイビング、模型船の制作、スキート射撃、フリーメイソンの活動、レザー・カーヴィング（革の彫刻）、読書。これらの活動に関するいくつかの写真は、なんじょうデジタルアーカイブで公開されます。

バイクでの冒険とバイクレース
ギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏はバイク愛好家で、バイクに乗って沖縄本島の多くの観光地を訪れました。それらの地で、彼は、戦争の惨状を目の当たりにしましたが、対照的に、美しい景色や快活な人たちも目にしました。彼は、31年の間に、沖縄が再建されていく様を見ました。そして、様々な土地で写真撮影を行いました。
また、彼はバイクレースの観戦にも熱中しました。なお、彼は、プロのバイクレーサー・伊藤史朗およびフィル・リードと会いました。

日本旅行
ギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏は本土に旅行へ行きました。
1948年、彼は愛知県の竹島や東京の商業地を訪ねました。1963年には九州や大阪の観光地を訪れました。また、バイク愛好家の彼は、バイクレースのグランプリ観戦のために、三重県の鈴鹿サーキットへも行きました。

産業
ギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏は仕事（船舶修理）に関する写真だけでなく、その他の産業に関する写真もたくさん撮影しました。後者は、家の建設、旅行バスガイド、木工、教育などに分類できます。
それらの中でとりわけユニークなものは、木工です。那覇軍港でソープボックス・カーを作る子供たちの写真があります。かれらが将来の仕事に役立つ、新たな技術を学ぶ様子を見ることは興味深いです。
また、歴史的に重要な写真もいくつかあります。浦添で新たな職業専門学校が開校したときの写真がそれです。これらの写真はUSCAR広報局により撮影され、同校の建設事業に関わったギルバート・E・クリスターソン氏に贈られました。USCARの民政官ジェラルド・ワーナー氏は、開校記念写真の何枚かに登場しています。

The Gilbert E. Christersson Collection 

Preface

This online collection consists mainly of digitized photos that G. E. Christersson took during his 31 year stay in Okinawa. All of them are rare old photos dating from the 1940’s to 1970’s. 

Among them are photos related to the Nanjo area. Mr. Christersson worked at Naha Port as a Shipwright Foreman in the Marine Repair Shop, a division of the U.S. Army Transportation Group. At his request, several men were hired from his wife’s hometown located in the Nanjo area.

One of his daughters, Carol Christersson, kindly sent these photos to the Nanjo city government office from the USA in 2024. This is the first time we have released photos donated from a foreign country and made captions for each image in both Japanese and English. In this regard, the Gilbert E. Christersson collection is unique among all the others on our website.

We were able to complete this project thanks to Carol Christersson’s dedicated contribution. She not only received permission to donate photos to us but also wrote an essay about her father. Furthermore, she gave us appropriate suggestions to improve the English explanations we created. We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for her cooperation.

About this Collection

About Gilbert E. Christersson

Gilbert E. Christersson was born 1928 in the United States. In February 1948, he arrived on Okinawa to begin his assignment as Marine Carpenter for the US Army. In June 1950, his 3 year enlistment ended. He kept the same job as a Civil Servant. In February1979, he left Okinawa with his wife and 5 daughters to the USA.

He had been good to the people in Okinawa. For example, as a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Coral Lodge 142, he participated in an American-Ryukyuan Friendship Program to help Ryukyuan children receive much needed vocational school training. Other noteworthy events: He rescued a boy who had fallen down an abandoned well, crafted and presented 50 pairs of crutches to handicapped Ryukyuan athletes for the 1964 Paralympic competition in Tokyo, and was rewarded for his courage and devotion to save a boat.

How did this project start?

His daughter, Carol Christersson, emailed us from the USA. She informed us of her father’s collection of old post-war Okinawa photographs and suggested they be preserved in Nanjo City’s online digital archive for the enjoyment of all. We were pleased to accept the offer and asked her to send as many photos as possible. She then began the process of digitizing photo prints and film negatives to donate.

Highlights of the Collection

EMPLOYMENT 
Gilbert E. Christersson worked for the US Army, mostly at Naha Military Port during his 31 year stay in Okinawa. This collection contains many photos of workers and skilled Okinawan ship carpenters preforming their duties onsite at the port. These photos are rare and worth your attention, as entry to this port had been severely restricted before Okinawa’s reversion to Japan. 
Gilbert E. Christersson produced two impressive changes. First, his suggestion to improve safety for Okinawan employees was approved by the Army’s Incentive Awards Committee. Second, he received a letter of appreciation for transforming a wasteland into a playground and athletic field for the Kakinohana Primary and Junior High School.

HOBBIES
Gilbert E. Christersson enjoyed various hobbies such as, snorkeling, diving, model boat building, skeet shooting, Masonic lodge activity, leather carving and reading. Photos of some of these activities are scheduled to be released in our online archive.

MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURES AND RACE
Gilbert E. Christersson’s love for motorcycles led him on many sightseeing adventures around the island where he encountered the devastation of war which was contrasted with the beautiful landscape and resilient people. He saw the rebuilding of Okinawa in his 31 year stay and captured images in various places.
He loved to watch motorcycle races and met professional motorcycle racers, Fumio Ito and Phil Read. 

TRIP TO JAPAN
Gilbert E. Christersson traveled to Japan:
In 1948, he visited Takeshima in Aichi prefecture and downtown Tokyo.
In 1963, he visited tourism sites in Kyushu Island and Osaka prefecture. Also, because he was a motorcycle enthusiast, he traveled to Suzuka Circuit in Mie prefecture for the Grand Prix.

INDUSTRY
Gilbert E. Christersson took a number of photos not only relating to his own job (ship repairing) but also other industries. The latter can be categorized into house building, tour bus guide, woodworking, and education, etc. 
A very unique one among them is woodworking. There are photos in which Okinawan boys are making soapbox cars at Naha Military Port. It is interesting to see them learning new skills that would be useful for future jobs. 
Also, there are historically important photos of the opening of a new vocational school in Urasoe.　These photos were taken by the Public Affairs Department, U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR) and given to Gilbert E. Christersson for his involvement in the project. USCAR Civil Administrator Gerald Warner appears in some photos of the school’s Grand Opening.

There are a few miscellaneous photos concerning Sashiki Youth Association, local Okinawan culture of dance and music, and his friends.
